The School of Agriculture at Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs designed to equip students with practical skills and scientific knowledge to address agricultural challenges in Papua New Guinea and the wider region. Our programs combine theory, research, and hands-on training to prepare graduates for careers in sustainable agriculture, agribusiness, research, and rural development.

Undergraduate Program

The undergraduate programs offered by the PNGUoT School of Agriculture provide students with a strong foundation in agricultural science, technology, and field-based practice. Through a balance of classroom learning, laboratory work, and practical training, students develop the skills and knowledge needed to contribute effectively to food security, sustainable farming, and agricultural development in Papua New Guinea.

Postgraduate Programs
Overview

The School also offers three postgraduate degree programs, the:

1. Master of Science in Agriculture M.Sc.(Ag)
2. Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.)
3. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The M.Sc.(Ag) program is a combination of coursework and research, while PhD and M.Phil. study programs are research only degrees.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD-Research)
  • Must have a Master degree in a field of study related to the subject of the proposed research.
  • Proven track record of research
  • More than 2 years’ work experience
  • Contact the School to confirm a Supervisor and other requirements before submitting your application


Master of Philosophy (MPhil-Research)
  • A merit degree or postgraduate diploma from a tertiary institution approved by the Postgraduate Studies, Research and Innovation Committee (PSR&IC), or
  • A Bachelor degree of Honors standard (GPA 3.7 out of 5) from a tertiary institution approved by the PSR&IC
  • Relevant first degree with an industry experience of more than two years


Master of Science (M.Sc.Ag)
  • A merit degree or postgraduate diploma from a tertiary institution approved by the Postgraduate Studies, Research and Innovation Committee (PSR&IC), or
  • A Bachelor degree of Honors standard (GPA 3 out of 5) from a tertiary institution approved by the PSR&IC
  • Relevant first degree with an industry experience of more than two years

This program is aimed at training and developing highly skilled agricultural professionals with specialization in different areas of agriculture to meet the increasing requirements for the agricultural industries including universities.

Program Outcomes: 

Rules for MSc in Agriculture with course work

The MSc degree in Agriculture will be fully governed by the existing “Rules for Master’s Degree based on Course Work” of the PNG University of Technology with the following exceptions.

1. The degree offered will be MSc in Agriculture.

2. There will be a three member advisory committee including the Principal Supervisor appointed by the HOD, Agriculture to help the student in selecting the courses and monitor the progress over the period of the study period. The major responsibility of guidance will lie with the Principal Supervisor.

3. The thesis will be marked as “Satisfactory” or “Unsatisfactory”. To pass, the candidates have to have a satisfactory grade.

Course duration :2 yrs

The MSc degree in agriculture is a full time program of studies extending over four academic semesters (two years). The students will be taking the courses as per the following schedule along with a research (thesis) component.
